I’ve gotten more into upcycling lately. I love the “use what you got” mentality and enjoy the challenge of trying to think of how best to reuse something. Recently I took a used toothpaste tube and made upcycled earrings. This morning I’m sharing the full tutorial with you.
To make your own upcycled earrings you will need:
- empty toothpaste tube
- earring wires
- paint
- paint brush
- straight pin
- printable earring template
Step 1: Cut off the two ends of the toothpaste tube. Clean off the remaining toothpaste. Even when you’ve squeezed as much as you can out there will always be a little left.
Step 2: Print off the earring template. I drew a variety of sizes so you can pick whatever size you like. If you want to see what size looks good on you cut one out. Then poke a hole in it with the straight pin. Put your erring wire on it through this hole. Try on the paper template to see how it looks.
Step 3: Once you have decided on which shape you like then place it on top of the toothpaste tube material. Trace around it with a pen.
My pen did not transfer ink onto the toothpaste tube material but it did leave the imprint of the lines I drew so I used that to tell me where to cut.
Step 4: Paint your cut outs. To make the painting process easier I used a straight pin to poke a hole in the shape where I would eventually poke my hole to attach the earring wire. The pin helps keep it from moving while painting.
Alternately I also tried painting the toothpaste tube material first and then cutting the shape out. That seemed to work well too and may be even easier. Once you paint one side and it has dried then paint the other side.
Step 5: Stick the earring wire through the hole that you poked with the straight pin. And you’re done!
The toothpaste tube I used is from my Tom’s of Maine’s new “Luminous White™” Toothpaste Clean Mint. I recently purchased my Luminous White Toothpaste at Walmart.
Luminous White is a new toothpaste from Tom’s of Maine and it is their most advanced whitening toothpaste ever. It’s safe on enamel and safe to use every day. Luminous White does not contain any artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.
Right now there’s an Ibotta offer for Tom’s of Maine’s Luminous White Toothpaste. You can earn .75 with the purchase of Tom’s of Maine® Luminous White Toothpaste.
Did you know that April is Earth Month? I plan to celebrate Earth Month this April by continuing to recycle, thinking about how we can use more green products and working on more upcycling projects. Maybe I will use some other materials to make some more upcycled earrings. How are you going to celebrate Earth Month? I’d love to hear your ideas.
