If you’ve been around the blog for a little while then you’ve probably met our dog Lucky before.
![diy dog bed](https://www.marymarthamama.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/how-to-sew-a-dog-bed-6.jpg.webp)
We love him and we think it’s important to know that there’s some little things that you can do every day to help your pet live a full and healthy life.
I take probiotics and I was interested in looking into how I can support Lucky’s digestive health as well. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, have a health benefit for pets too.
On a recent trip to Pet Supplies Plus we picked up some Purina® Pro Plan® SAVOR® Shredded Blend Adult Dog Food – Chicken & Rice for Lucky. The probiotics in select dry Pro Plan® Savor® formulas can exert a positive impact on digestive health by balancing the levels of bacteria in your pet’s intestines.

How to Sew a Dog Bed
Recently I wanted to pamper Lucky even more by making him a new, plush dog bed. Making a dog bed is super easy if you follow my tutorial for how to sew a dog bed. This tutorial with make a dog bed for a small/medium sized dog. Adjust the measurements to make a larger or smaller bed.
Supplies Needed
- 1 yard of fabric for the bottom and sides of the dog bed
- 3/4 yard of soft fabric for the top of the dog bed
- 32 ounces of stuffing
- coordinating thread
- rotary cutting set or scissors
- pins or sewing clips
- sewing machine
Tutorial
Step 1: Wash and dry your fabric. Iron your fabric if you can. I ironed my fabric that I used for the bottom and sides of the dog bed but not the fabric for the top.
Cut out a rectangle that measures 20 in X 30 in from the fabric for the top of the dog bed and a rectangle that measures 31 in X 41 in from the fabric for the bottom and sides of the dog bed.
Step 2: Take you fabric for the bottom and sides and lay it down with the right side up. Lay your other fabric piece on top of it in the center. Use a quilting ruler and rotary cutter or scissors to cut out a 5 inch square from each corner.

Step 3: Set the top piece of fabric aside. Take one corner of your bottom/side fabric and fold it over so that the two sides of your 5 inch square that you cut out are together, with the right sides of the fabric together. Pin (or clip) and sew them together, sewing 1/2 inch from the edge.

Step 4: Repeat step 3 for the other 3 corners of the bottom/side fabric.

Step 5: Now lay your top piece of fabric down on top of the “open box” that you have sewn. Pin it around the top edges. Start in the middle of one side and sew most of the way around the top edge but stop about 3-4 inches short. Backstitch both when you start and stop.

Step 6: Turn the dog bed right side out. Use an unsharpened pencil or a corner turner to push the corners out so that they are nice and square.
Stuff the stuffing into the inside of the dog bed. Once you’ve stuffed it nice and full then you hand stitch the hole in the side shut and you’re done!

I made this out of denim, old blue jeans actually, and put a zipper in the top of one end. And my "stuffing" is dried cedar chips (hence the zipper). Cedar chips helps with the fleas that are inevitable on our farm furbabies that are indoor / outdoor lovebabies, even with bi-weekly baths and flea treatment. I change the cedar chips on a certain day of the month and the old chips go under the porch which is the 2nd favorite place for them to sleep in the daytime, and sometimes night - we have a dog door and enclosed fence, so the farm critters cannot visit and they can potty when they want.

Yes! This project is perfect for upcycling some old pillows. I’m working on making videos for my most popular tutorials. So far I’ve only made one- it’s in my easy burp cloth post. I hope to do more soon!
