I have two sons and I love them dearly. Like any other mama, I want to keep them safe from anything that might harm them physically or emotionally.
But I know that is not possible.
They will get hurt.
And sometimes this knowledge that will get hurt fills me with immense fear and sadness. Lately God has sought to work on that area of my heart. To mold and shape my reaction… and to prepare me to let them go in the future… by letting go now.
My husband and I are currently reading The Parent Adventure, a Bible study about “preparing your kid for a life with God”.
Did you catch that mamas? They are going to leave. Granted, they will be men when they leave, but they are going to leave. Be still, my heart.
While the thought of them leaving leaves me with some trepidation, Rodney and Selma Wilson (the authors of the study) really opened my eyes to some comforting Biblical truths that I want to share with you:
- God is their ultimate Provider, Healer, Counselor, and Protector (Colossians 1:16).
- My role as a parent is to prepare them for a life with God and responsible adulthood.
- God has plans to give them a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
My children depend on me (and my husband) to meet all their needs. But one day they will leave and so my true job is to teach them to depend on God, Who will always be with them.
Mamas (and papas), take heart. Put your trust in God. He will take care of your little ones. And let your children see that you put your trust in Him- so that they learn to put their trust in Him too.
Anyone else struggle with fear about your children’s future? Any pearls of wisdom to share with the rest of us? I highly recommend The Parent Adventure Bible study to any of you. And no, this is not an advertisement or sponsored post. It’s just me sharing what is helping me in the hopes that it might help you too.
I’m reading through the Bible in 3 years with Good Morning Girls. We’re reading one chapter a day and you can find the schedule for this month over at Women Living Well, where I’m linking up with other bloggers to share what God is teaching us through this study.

My daughter just turned 14 and my son is 16... and learning to drive. The thought of them leaving makes me tear up every.single.time. This is one of the hardest things for me to deal with. Thank you for posting this... I needed it. God Bless!

I cannot fathom the first time they will DRIVE away all by themselves! I'm glad that God used this little post to bless you.

I needed to read these words today. My son is turning 12 headed into those tumultuous teen years. I needed the reminder that he is in God's hand and to teach him that truth as well.

Oh, I can't even imagine. Mine are only 1 and 3. But he does have all of them in His Hands. Have a great day!
