With Halloween right around the corner I thought I’d share my super hero mask template and tutorial with you all. I’ve made a number of masks for my sons who love to dress up all the time and they are so easy to make that you will want to make up a bunch for your own little super heroes.
The awesome thing about these DIY super hero masks is that you can make them if you sew or you can use your hot glue gun and make it a total no-sew project. Either way it’s a super quick and simple project that any kid (or grown-up) would love.
DIY Super Hero Mask Template
Supplies:
- felt
- elastic
- hot glue gun or sewing machine (I use this sewing machine)
- my free printable Super Hero Mask template
Step 1: Print out the Super Hero Mask template. It should be about 7 inches wide or so. Hold it up to your child’s face and make sure it seems about the right size. If not, then adjust the printer settings until the mask is about the right size.
Step 2: Cut the super hero mask template out. Use it to trace the super hero mask pattern onto the felt. You will need to trace two of these onto the felt.
Step 3: Cut out the masks from the felt. You are cutting out two of these because one is the front and the other is the back.Step 4: Cut a piece of elastic. I cut a piece of that was about 16 inches for my son. Depending on the size of the child’s head that you’re making this for you may want to cut a piece that is a bit smaller or bigger.
To determine the size I needed I had him hold the mask to his face and then I used my tailor’s tape measure to measure around from one side of the mask around the back of the head to the other side of the mask and added a little on so that there would be some overlap.
Step 5: Lay down one of your masks. Lay one end of the elastic down on top of one side. Then lay the other end of the elastic onto the other side of the mask. Lay the other piece of the mask on top, so that you’re sandwiching the elastic pieces in the middle.
Step 5: If you are using the hot glue, then glue everything into place. I glued all around the outside edges and around the eye holes.
If you are sewing then sew all around the outside edges and around the edges of the eye holes.Once you’ve attached the two pieces with the elastic in the middle then you are all done!
If you make one then please let me know in the comments below!
