Making your own poncho is super easy. Today I’m going to share how to make a poncho in five simple steps that even a beginner can follow. This is a perfect project for beginners because it is so quick and easy!
How to Make a Poncho
Now, this poncho is made with knit fabric… and if you’re new to sewing with knits that can be a little intimidating but don’t let it scare you off of trying this! Using a ballpoint needle and a stiffer, thicker knit fabric will help things go more smoothly.
Supplies Needed to Make a Poncho
- 1 piece of knit fabric that’s 30 X 60 inches
- ballpoint needle (you need this to sew with knits)
How to Make a Poncho
Step 1: Wash and dry your fabric. Cut it to a 30 inch X 60 inch rectangle. I find that this is where having a rotary cutting set really helps save some time over just trying to do this with scissors and a ruler or something like that.
Step 2: Fold your fabric in half width-side with the right sides together so that you have a 30 inch X 30 inch square. Make sure the right sides are on the inside and the wrong sides are on the outside.
Step 3: Pin or clip along one of the sides that’s perpendicular to the fold (not the side across from it).
Step 4: Sew along that side, sewing 1/2 inch from the edge BUT stop 10 inches from the fold. Leave those 10 inches unsewn. Be sure to backstitch when you start and stop so that the seams are nice and strong.
Step 5: Fold the hem that you just sewed to one side of your seam. Pin it down and then sew all along it about 1/4 inch from the edge, again making sure to backstitch when you start and stop.
Now you know how to make a poncho! I left the edges along the bottom and at the neckline raw.
How to Make a Poncho
You can easily make a poncho in just a few steps.
Materials
- 1 yard of knit material
- coordinating thread
Tools
- pins or sewing clips
- scissors or rotary cutting set
- sewing machine
- ballpoint needle
Instructions
- Wash and dry your fabric. Cut it to a 30 inch X 60 inch rectangle.
- Fold your fabric in half width-side with the right sides together so that you have a 30 inch X 30 inch square. Make sure the right sides are on the inside and the wrong sides are on the outside.
- Pin or clip along one of the sides that's perpendicular to the fold (not the side across from it).
- Sew along that side, sewing 1/2 inch from the edge BUT stop 10 inches from the fold. Leave those 10 inches unsewn. Be sure to backstitch when you start and stop so that the seams are nice and strong.
- Fold the hem that you just sewed to one side of your seam. Pin it down and then sew all along it about 1/4 inch from the edge, again making sure to backstitch when you start and stop.
Knit fabric is not going to fray at the edges like woven fabric will so you don’t have to hem these edges but you could if you prefer them to have a more polished look.
