They say there’s nothing certain in life except death and taxes…I’d add laundry to the list too. I’m a mom of 2 boys and there’s always laundry in my house. Today I’m going to help you stay on top of your laundry by showing you how to make a DIY laundry hamper.
I think it’s important to use a good detergent and have a regular laundry schedule. On a recent trip to Walmart, I picked up Persil® ProClean® Stain Fighter laundry detergent.
Persil laundry detergent has stain fighting enzymes specially designed to break down stains and deliver an exceptional deep clean. It gives a new level of clean for all of life’s messy moments.
I have two little boys so we have a lot of those moments. Persil laundry detergent scents also have a powerful freshness that lasts long after you’ve washed your laundry.

In addition to having a great detergent, having a fabric bag with handles serving as a hamper enables my son to help carry his laundry down to the laundry room.
Having him bring down his dirty laundry to the laundry room helps me keep thing moving so the laundry doesn’t pile up. This fabric laundry hamper is super simple to sew and it’s a basic tutorial that even a beginner could follow.
DIY Laundry Hamper Tutorial
Supplies Needed to Make a DIY Laundry Hamper
- 1.5 yards of fabric for the outside of the laundry bag
- 1.5 yards of fabric for the lining on the inside of the bag
- 2 yards of fusible interfacing
- 1/2 yard of cotton webbing for the handles
- coordinating thread
- rotary cutting set or scissors
- pins or sewing clips
- sewing machine
Steps to Make a DIY Laundry Hamper
Step 1: Wash, dry, and iron your fabric for the outside and the lining of the laundry hamper. Before you cut into your fabric read all of step 1. First cut out 2 rectangles that measure 22 in X 29 in and then 1 circle that’s 18 in diameter from the outside fabric.
Depending on the orientation of the pattern on your fabric you may need to get creative with using scraps that are less than 18 inches to make a circle. For my outside fabric I had a piece left over after cutting out the rectangles that was big enough for my 18 in circle but for my lining fabric the pattern ran the other way and so I had to take 2 pieces of fabric, sew them together and then cut out my circle.
The circle is for the bottom of the diy laundry hamper so it really doesn’t matter that it’s made from 2 pieces.
Cut out 2 rectangles and 1 circle of the same sizes from the fabric you are using for the lining.
Step 2: Take your rectangles that you cut out of the outside fabric. Lay them down with the right side down. Cut out pieces of the interfacing that are 29 inches long and attach them to the back of your rectangles.
The interfacing pieces will be only 20 in X 29 in so they will be shorter than your rectangles that you cut out of the outside fabric. I just centered them so that there was some space at the top and bottom where there is no interfacing. Attach the interfacing according to the package directions.
Take your remaining interfacing and cut out pieces that will cover the circle that you cut out of the outside fabric. Apply the interfacing pieces to the back of the circle just like you did for the rectangles.
Step 3: Take your 2 rectangles of fabric from the outside fabric. Lay one down with the right side up and lay the other one down on top of it with the right side down. Pin (or clip) and sew them together along the shorter sides, sewing 1/2 inch from the edge.
Sew the two rectangles cut from the lining fabric together with the right sides together like you did for the outside fabric rectangles BUT leave an area of about 5 inches unsewn on one of the sides. Don’t do it at the very end of the side, but try to do it somewhere closer to the bottom.
Press the seams open.
Step 4: Now you’re going to attach the circles to the bottoms of the tubes you made. Pin or clip the circle you cut out of the lining fabric to the tube of the lining fabric and sew all the way around, sewing 1/2 inch from the edge. Do the same for the circle you cut out of the outside fabric and the tube made from the outside fabric.
Step 5: Turn the cylinder made from the outside fabric right side out. Now put it inside of the cylinder made from the lining. The lining should still be wrong side out.
Line up the top edges of the cylinders, pin or clip them together and then sew all the way around the top edge, sewing 1/2 inch from the edge.
Step 6: Use that hole you left unsewn in the side of the lining to pull the outside of the hamper through and right side out. Sew the hole shut, stuff the lining inside the hamper and give it all a good press.
Then topstitch along the top edge, sewing 1/2 inch from the edge.
Step 7: Cut out your cotton webbing in half so that you have two 9 inch pieces. Fold each end under 1 inch and then pin and sew it onto the side of the hamper. It’s hard to see but on the folded over inch I sew a 1 inch box or square with an X through it.
And with that you’re all done! You’ve made your very own DIY laundry hamper.
