Five on Friday {The Sick & Sicker Edition}

With being sick and Thanksgiving travels and being sick again it’s been a while.  I’m feeling a little out of practice on this Five on Friday thing but it’s time to get back into the swing of things.  I’ll use this Five on Friday to catch you up on all the happenings around here.  Be forewarned if you are squeamish… I’m about to use the word vomit a few times… so feel free to bail at this point if you don’t want to read about our gross Thanksgiving.

1. Bronchitis

So my son S had a cough for almost 2 weeks and we took him in just before traveling for Thanksgiving just to make sure there was nothing worse going on/see why he wasn’t getting better.  Basically the doctor we saw (not ours) said it was bronchitis with a throat infection so he prescribed an antibiotic for S and told us he was ok to travel.  So on the road we went.

2. Side Effects

Wednesday night (the night before Thanksgiving) we had completed our trip to my parents in Virginia and we settle into bed for the night.  Some time around 10:30 I heard S coughing and then I heard him vomit.  Initially I thought the vomiting was just the result of all the congestion and coughing so I clean him and everything else up and settle him back into the pack-n-play to go back to sleep.  And then he vomited again.  Several more times.  At this point I thought the medicine was the problem because the label warned that it could cause nausea and vomiting.

On the plus side, my siblings and I did fit in a little Nintendo and catching up before anyone had gotten sick yet.

3. Thanksgiving

S seemed to do better in the morning and we made it through Thanksgiving dinner without him getting sick.  But then shortly after I gave him his medicine that evening he threw up on my husband.  My mom went running out of the room and my sister followed her thinking she was getting some paper towels and things to clean it up.  To her surprise she found my mom in the mudroom vomiting into the garbage can.  Apparently she doesn’t do well around vomit.  Well, my sister came back in laughing and helped me clean S up again.  At this point I decided to stop giving him the medicine until I could talk to a nurse the next day.

4. Black Friday

I called our doctors office and was able to get a new medicine for S and he did not get sick any more.  My stomach started hurting Friday evening but I just assumed it was because I had not slept well in a few days, so I decided to keep my plans I had that night to catch up with a friend.  I had warned my friend that S had gotten sick and that we thought it was the medicine but it could always be a virus.  She told me I should come anyway since I wasn’t sick and she doubted I could pass it to her or her kids.  Well, in the midst of us catching up I had to run to the bathroom because I was violently ill.  I’m sure that she could hear me down the hall.  I feel really bad for getting sick in her house, but she is such a good friend that I’m glad it was her and not someone else.  I went home right after that and proceeded to be sick through the night.  I was not alone.  My son A, my sister, brother, and eventually my mom and dad also got sick.  Apparently it was a virus not side effects from the meds that had made S sick.  That much is clear now.  I’m thinking he picked up a virus when I took him to the doctor’s office.

my target pajamas

I recently got these pajamas from Target and they have made convalescing a little more comfortable.

5. Recovery

Saturday my husband took care of S who at that point was totally well while the rest of us slept most of the day.  On Sunday my husband drove us home and we’ve been in recovery mode since.  You know what’s annoying?  Tuesday morning we all woke up with a cough/colds.  So we’re just trying to get healthy now.  Lots of rest and laying around.  And coughing.  But thankfully no vomiting.

Hi from the linkup! No lie. I did #3 in October and didn't even gag.

Yeah, it's weird how cupping our hands to catch it is the instinctual reaction to a kid vomiting, isn't it? Good for you for not gagging. :)
